The
visual arts are taught throughout the age range. We have plans to offer a
full programme of vocational and academic courses from KS4.
Sixth Form
Sixth form courses began in Sept 2005. The department
offers AS level in Art & Design, which covers painting, drawing,
printmaking, textile design, sculpture and ceramics as discrete options.
From Sept 2006 Art & Design A2 courses will prepare pupils for entry to
Higher Education courses.
KS3, Years 7 to 9
Curriculum Time
Pupils are taught art & design at KS3 for 3 hrs per
timetable cycle and receive additional inputs from visiting artists as
part of their course.
Academy’s Facilities for Arts Teaching
One Art studio and one multi purpose art/technology room
is situated in the main teaching block.
Exhibitions and other displays are mounted in community
venues or on several display areas in other public areas of the Academy.
Access to other local arts facilities
Being situated close to central London the Academy has
easy access to all major galleries and museums and has a developing
relationship with the Whitechapel Art Gallery, the Tate Modern, The London
College of Printing, London Metropolitan University and Bow Arts Trust.
Connecting with the Community
We are using our ever growing links with partner arts
and community organisations to enhance the range of our art activities in
Academy hours and in extra curricular and community work.
The Bow Arts Trust
Is our main partner arts organisation. At the outset we
felt that to be successful in bringing artists into the Academy and our
family of schools a real two way partnership was needed between the
Academy and a single arts organisation.
The Artists in Residence/Artists in the Community
Schemes
Our work placing and sponsoring artists in the community
will continue in Sept 2004 with our artists in residence working in local
primary and secondary schools. In fact we will spend over one third of our
annual government grant on local community initiatives.
The Future
Over the next 2 years we hope to
- Expand the network of contacts particularly those who
work in the community, with disadvantaged, disabled and elderly people.
We want to involve ourselves in encouraging small enterprise schemes and
art therapy.
- Remain a catalyst for further development of Art &
Design Education in LBS
Our next two year plan will aim to spread the word
further and offer the experience of our co-ordination of arts initiatives
to more schools and community groups in the borough.
