Humanities
offers pupils the opportunity to study across three diverse subject areas:
History, Geography and Religious Studies.
These are all academic disciplines in their own right
yet also complement each other and allow for enhanced cross-curricular
learning. Throughout each subject area students work and learn through ICT
as well as having ample opportunity for extended individual study, pair
work, group work and even role plays.
In History the
pupils learn how to use a wide range of transferable skills. They learn to
identify bias and analyse primary and secondary sources during
investigations. They discover the breadth of history ranging from Kings
and Queens and great battles through to understanding the everyday
concerns of “real” people. Pupils learn to recognise how social and
economic factors have shaped the world in which they live today.
In Geography the
pupils do not only learn about global issues but about events and places
that are real to them, including studies of England and the changing face
of London. They get the opportunity to look at business in a local and
global context through a structured study of world sports, such as
Football. Pupils are conversant in the differences between human and
physical geography and study the different economic development of
countries around the globe.
In Religious Studies
each class explores the six major world religions. They explore issues
such as spirituality and their own experiences, as well as the cultural
context to religious celebrations and customs. There are opportunities to
discover how religions and societies co-exist and how religion can be
central to people’s lives. Pupils are able to consider how communities and
individuals relate to their religion and the central role a place of
worship can take within local communities.
