The Library at the City of London Academy
 

 


The Academy Library is a central, multi format whole school resource which aims to support the work of all staff and students by:-

  •  supporting the curriculum, encouraging independent learning and assisting in
      the development of life long learning skills.
  •  developing the reading habit, raising literacy levels and encouraging an
      enjoyment of books, reading and libraries.
  •  providing resources, guidance and accommodation for research tasks,
      homework, study and revision.
  •  supporting students’ leisure interests.
  •  contributing to pupils’ social development by involving them in the running of
      the library.

All staff and students are automatically members of the school Library Resources Centre and are able to borrow resources either for their own use or use by classes or groups.

Opening Hours

  • Mon-Thurs - 8:15am-5:00pm
  • Friday       - 8:15am-2:00pm

The library is open throughout the day, including the lunch periods, and is available for individual, group and class use.

Loans

Students use their Smartcard as their library card which enables them to borrow 3 items at a time from our stock of over 8,000 books, DVDs, and CDs. These items can be renewed. Weekly overdues are sent out via tutors and letters home.

Resources and Services

  • A developing collection of fiction, information and reference books, DVDs, CDs, newspapers, magazines, etc.
  • A computerised library management system (Eclipse) enables all stock to be searched on the catalogue by author, title, subject and keywords.
  • 24 networked computers, printer and photocopier.

Curriculum Use and Information Literacy

All students receive a basic introduction to the library and then have opportunities to develop and reinforce their information skills and independent learning strategies through lessons which are timetabled by teaching staff for research in all areas of the curriculum.

Reading/Literacy

We run a wide range of activities to encourage enjoyment in reading :- displays, competitions and quizzes, clubs, bookweeks, booksales, reviews, Accelerated Reader book quizzes (Star Reader), bookboxes etc

Homework

Library staff are available at lunchtime and after school to assist students with their homework tasks.
