On Friday 2nd December four students from year 9 at COLA (Katy Foxcroft, Charlotte Smith, Hannah Cassidy, and Abdul Quadri) visited Gareth Wynn (EDF Energy’s Director for the Olympics 2012) at the EDF offices in central London. What did we do? We interviewed Gareth Wynn about how EDF was making sure the Olympics were sustainable. For example, they provide an efficient fuel for the Olympic torches and cauldron and ensure that the Olympics have Eco Monitors which reduce the amount of electricity used. We got to hold the past Olympic torches (Vancouver & Beijing). We also got to try the new electric mini cooper car (100% Electric) which will transport all the people involved in the Olympics around London. They have 600 of them! EDF run The Pod, a website for schools which try to be sustainable. The Eco Warriors at COLA work closely with them and have used many of their resources to run our Switch Off campaign. There are many careers in the energy industry if you would like to work in sustainability or engineering. Look at the EDF website if you are interested! “It was a great experience, it turned out to be the most interesting and enjoyable trip yet. Mr Wynn was really funny and interesting.”
