Southwark Council and the City of London Corporation were delighted today after the announcement that the Bid for the newly formed City of London Primary Academy, Southwark (CoLPA) in Bermondsey has been approved by the Department for Education.

Plans are now being put into place to ensure that local residents have a first class primary school opening in the heart of Bermondsey in September 2016, with an initial intake of 60 Reception students. It will reach its full complement of 420 students by 2023.

Southwark Council and the City of London Corporation plan to create an inclusive, non-denominational school that welcomes all children and families from the local area, including those with special needs, with a provision to Autistic Spectrum Condition. The school will increase parental choice in an area where there is a pressing and increasing need for additional primary school places.

The location of the new school is on Galleywall Road on the site of the former Galleywall School. This site has recently been occupied by Southwark Park Primary who have now moved to their new premises. The existing site will be completely refurbished in readiness for new pupils in September 2016.

Angela Murphy, City of London Corporation Education Strategy Advisor, said: “We are delighted at the confidence that the Department for Education have placed in the City of London to provide a new school on the Galleywall site. The success of the Bid is a testament to the excellent relationship between Southwark Council and the City of London Corporation – with the valued support of local residents – and has meant that potential pupils will have a first class primary school located in the heart of Bermondsey.  We are looking forward to working with Southwark Council to create a community-focused, excellent school with aspirational, enterprising and adventurous values at its heart and to welcoming pupils to an exciting new primary school, that will ensure that they have the opportunity to benefit from an enriched education, with unique and exciting opportunities.”

Cllr Victoria Mills, Cabinet Member for Children and Schools, said: "I'm delighted that through working with the City of London Corporation, we have been able to secure a much needed new primary school for Bermondsey. We know how concerning it is for parents when they hear that schools are struggling to meet demand for places. Southwark Council has been working incredibly hard to meet the increasing demands resulting from the popularity of our schools. This includes working with partners such as the City of London Corporation to open new schools like this one. We will continue to work closely with the Corporation to ensure that we meet the challenging deadline of opening the school in September 2016.”

Cllr Lucas Green said "This shows what can be achieved when local people come together - The City of London Corporation and Southwark Council have worked very hard to turn this around so quickly, but huge credit is also due to the staff and Governors of the existing schools, City of London Academy (Southwark) and Redriff Primary School. If the new school lives up to their very high standards, then this is excellent news indeed for local families and their children, in an area where the places are really needed."

Further information and updates on Admissions and refurbishment progress at the City of London Primary Academy, Southwark will be posted on this Website shortly.

The location of the new school is on Galleywall Road on the site of Galleywall School which is now occupied by Southwark Park Primary until 2015, when they will move to their new premises. The site will be completely refurbished.

Children - the Capital within the Capital

The City is committed to ensuring the very best education for children and families within the City of London and for children educated at City schools. We strive to continually raise standards to create outstanding schools, promoting excellent teaching and learning, supporting a high quality learning environment, and promoting an enriched education.

The City of London Corporation already supports several high-quality education institutions, and spends around £30m per year on education. We sponsor three secondary academies and run three independent schools; The City of London School, The City of London School for Girls and The City of London Freemen’s School. This is in addition to our role as the local education authority responsible for Sir John Cass’s Foundation Primary School and Redriff Primary School in Rotherhithe.

The new Primary Academy Southwark will be the latest addition to this family of schools. Like its partner schools, the Academy will benefit from the City’s strong links with business and will specialise in Creativity, and Enterprise and Personal development.

The best education incorporates both academic excellence and adventure. Children will be given opportunities to explore the world around them, learn new skills, and understand the communities in which they live . London is one of the greatest cities in the world. Its wealth is not in the ‘square mile’ – but in her people, the future is locked not in banks but in the potential of her children. It is the aim of the City to help individuals and communities realise their potential and to secure London as a sustainable and self-sustained city.
