Governors

The City of London Academy (Southwark) is run by a Board of Governors working with the Principal to secure the delivery of education in the Academy ensuring it is suitable for all the students.

The role of the Board of Governors is to manage the Academy with a view to providing the best education and educational opportunities for all of the students.

Governors help the Principal:

  • set the Academy's vision and aims

  • establish and maintain the Academy’s ethos

  • set the Academy’s plans and policies

  • monitor and evaluate Academy performance

  • promote self-evaluation to sustain Academy improvement

Governor Profiles

Andrew McMurtrie - Chair of Governors

 City of London Corporation Sponsor Governor

I was elected as a member of Common Council (for Coleman Street Ward) in 2013 and am the Deputy Chairman of the City's Financial Investment Board and sitting on the Port Health & Environmental services committee.  I am a Director of City YMCA and am an investment committee member of the Southwark Diocesan Board of Finance.

 

I am a Magistrate in City, Westminster and Hammersmith.  A Liveryman of Salters' Company, I have had a career in Investment Management.   I am married with 3 daughters.


Richard Bannister - Principal & Governor 

 I was appointed a Governor on taking up the post of Principal at the Academy in April 2011.

My education experience has involved working in high performing London Schools for well over 20 years in a variety of pastoral and subject lead roles.  For over 14 years, I have worked in School Leadership Teams having held a broad portfolio of responsibilities and have worked advising or being a Governor for a similar length of time in three London schools.

In recent years, I have also been an Education Advisor and Director of a West London Education Business Partnership.  I am passionate about education and the impact it has in transforming young people lives and the communities they live in.

Simon Atkinson - City of London Corporation Appointed Governor

I am Assistant Chief Executive at Ipsos MORI. 

Ipsos MORI employs more than 700 people in Southwark and over the last year has developed a growing partnership with the Academy.  Our staff are engaged in a range of activities with both students and staff, including work experience, curriculum support and career advice/mentoring.

I have worked at Ipsos MORI since 1990, and specialise in public opinion, local government and customer satisfaction research.  My career has included spells heading up research departments, as well as support functions including HR and Marketing & Communications.

I am a Committee Member of the British Polling Council, and am a judge in the annual Management Consultancies Association awards.

Antony Smyth - City of London Corporation Appointed Governor

I am a partner of EY (Ernst & Young), one of the largest professional services firms; we provide audit, tax, transaction and consulting services.

I am an accountant and work on legal and regulatory compliance matters for banks, insurers and asset managers. In my teens I attended night school for GCSE and A level equivalence and completed a 7,000 hour tailoring apprentice.

I was educated in New Zealand; I taught undergraduate and master’s level IT management for four years at the University of Toronto in Canada.  I live in West Sussex and work in Southwark.

I have been a sponsor nominated Governor since 2011.

William Fraser - City of London Sponsor Governor

 I was a Member of Common Council in the City of London from 1981-2017. During that time, amongst other appointments, I served as Chairman of The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, on the Education Committee and from 2003-2015 of the Board of Governors of the Academy.

I worked in the City as a stockbroker for 50 years retiring in 2008.

Amongst other appointments I have been a Governor of The London College of Printing and a Trustee of The Central Foundation Schools of London.

I am currently Chairman of Partnership for Young London and of the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association. I am a Trustee of the Horlock Educational Trust.

Elaine Davis - City of London Sponsor Governor

 

 I am a Victim Care Officer and work for Victim Support the National Charity for Victims of Crime part-time,    I have also recently joined Transport for London as a Customer Service Assistant.

I have also been a Foundation school Governor at a local church primary school for 8 years.  I have always been passionate, interested and dedicated to children, their education and well-being.

Keith Bottomley - City of London Sponsor Governor

 Keith is a Chartered Banker and communications professional with a career spanning 31 years at NatWest / Royal Bank of Scotland. His last role at RBS was as Director of Communications for the new challenger bank Williams & Glyn. He is now a communications consultant.

 

He is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights and Worshipful Company of Pattenmakers, life member and serves on the Council of the City Branch of the Royal Society of St George, Past Chairman of Broad Street Ward Club and member of Bridge, Broad Street and Candlewick Ward Clubs. He is a Governor of the City of London School and Trustee of Partnership for Young London, Central Foundation Schools of London and Housing for the Homeless Central Fund.
