New Sixth Form Consultation

Consultation on the expansion of School premises at City of London Academy

September 2017

Foreword

The Governors of City of London Academy would like to hear your views on a proposal to expand the School’s Sixth Form on its site in Lynton Road to a satellite site in Rotherhithe New Road, where a purpose built sixth form centre will be built, helping to widen the horizons of inner city residents so that they aspire to employment in the financial services and business sector, providing a highly skilled workforce for the City of London and surrounding communities.

We are in the process of finalising the plans with a view to submitting a planning funding bid to the Education Funding Agency in December 2015. We would therefore like to consult with parents, staff, the local community and other stakeholders about this proposal.

About City of London Academy

City of London Academy is a vibrant and innovative educational institution in the heart of Bermondsey, sponsored by the City of London Corporation. In October 2011 a full Ofsted report was carried out, and the school was judged as good overall with aspects of its provision such as leadership, care, guidance and support for students as outstanding. The strength of this leadership is evidenced in the improvement in standards which have been achieved since that date.

Why expand our Sixth Form?

We wish to further improve our School by offering our current and future students improved facilities. Whilst we have made significant improvements to our current school buildings, we are restricted with the buildings available to improve further. A site built for 900 pre 16 and 200 pst 16 students will now be catering for 1200 pre and 400 post 16 students. We know that offering the best facilities possible to young people can make a huge positive impact upon their learning, motivation and aspirations.

We are a very popular over-subscribed school, with the Academy being parents placing City of London Academy first choice on their SCAF than there are places. The Academy is six times oversubscribed; we serve the two catchment areas; the City of London and Southwark.

The proposal is to extend City of London Academy’s campus on a satellite site on Rotherhithe New Road, 400 metres from the main site. The new campus will dramatically increase the capacity of teaching and learning for sixth form students. This will significantly improve the facilities we are able to offer current and future students to the school and sixth form. It will also meet the governments new post 16 accountability measures which states that all young people should be in education or training until age 18.

The Local Authority has been in discussion with the School for some time as it is expected that a significant additional Sixth Form places required in the borough from 2017 or 2018. The School will still need to source external funding for this project.

How will the decision be reached?

If it is agreed to proceed with the proposal, a business case and a financial plan will be submitted to the Education Funding Authority (EFA) to request approval to expand and a bid to the CIF Fund placed to secure the additional funding required. This will include a summary of the public consultation and the views and comments received. The EFA will analyse the business case and the financial plan and make a recommendation to the Secretary of State, The Secretary of State will then either approve or reject the proposal. Governors will consider the views of a wide range of stakeholders.
