Applications for 6th Form Admission in
September 2007The City of London Academy (Southwark) is open to all
students of all abilities. To be eligible for a place:
- The Entrant's home address should be within the
catchment areas.
- The Entrant must reach the age of 16 during the year
1 September - 31 August inclusive, immediately prior to entry to the
Academy sixth form.
- The Entrant must have prior attainment of 5+ A*-C
grades at GCSE (or GNVQ Full Intermediate for AVCE Art courses),
including English and Mathematics, and a B or higher in each subject to
be studied at AS level.
Students living outside both catchment areas will be
admitted if there are available places and then according to the published
criteria.
Criteria for Admission
The Academy will have 100 places available. This means
that we shall probably not be able to give all applicants a place and some
people will be disappointed.
If there are more applicants than places, specific
criteria apply. The essential points are given below (full details are
available on the pages that follow):
- The Academy will admit students who are wholly or
mainly drawn from the area in which the school is situated
- The Academy will prioritise students from within its
catchment areas
How to Apply
All applicants are required to complete an
Application Form and deliver it to the
Academy by the stated deadline. The deadline is given in the application
form. Late applicants will be considered, but applicants who apply before
the deadline will be given priority.
The Academy will consider all applications for places,
providing the eligibility criteria is met.
Students with Special Educational
Needs
The Academy reserves the right to admit students with Statements of
Special Educational Needs where the City of London Academy (Southwark) is
appropriately named in the SEN Statement.
The Academy is intending to make particular provision
for students with hearing impairment and therefore the Academy will be
particularly suited to students needing this facility.
Who May be Excluded from Applying?
The Academy may refuse admission to applicants who have
been excluded from two or more other Schools. The ability to refuse
admissions runs for a period of two years from the last exclusion.
What Happens if the Year is
Oversubscribed?
In the event of oversubscription the following
arrangements will apply:
Applicants who fulfil the prior attainment requirements
of 5 A*-C at GCSE or equivalent will be admitted according to the criteria
listed below in the order listed:
- Eligible applicants residing in Catchment Area One
shown on the attached map.
- Eligible applicants residing in Catchment Area Two
shown on the attached map and, where there are more such applicants than
places, students who live nearest to the Academy (measured by the
shortest safe walking distance from their normal family home to the
junction of Lynton Road with St James’s Road) will be given priority.
- Eligible applicants residing outside of the Catchment
Areas shown on the attached maps and, where there are more such
applicants than available places.
Notwithstanding the provisions above, the Secretary of
State may direct the Academy to admit a named student to the Academy on
application from a LEA.
Arrangements for Appeals
There will be an independent Appeals Panel appointed in
accordance with the provisions of the statutory Code of Practice on School
Admission Appeals.
If the applicant has not been offered a place, they will
have the right of appeal to the panel.
