Library and Reading

The City of London Academy library aims to foster literacy, independent learning and a love of reading in all students. We have a developing and engaging reading culture, encouraging exploration of the imaginative worlds of fiction, and the assimilation of knowledge within the worlds of non-fiction.

Our library is situated in the atrium, at the heart of the academy, and is highly valued for its place at the centre of teaching and learning and the opportunities it affords for pupils to develop as readers, independent learners, scholars and informed citizens.  All of our students are encouraged to read for pleasure and for academic progress.

Within our academy library, there are books that appeal to all tastes and interests. We have a huge range of fiction, from classics to current best-sellers, and we welcome requests for new titles.  Reference text and non-fiction books are also available to support learning.  Pupils can browse our collection and also use our recommended reading lists linked below for guidance. The library also promotes special dates in the year, such as, World Book Day, Black History Month, Pride Month, Remembrance Day and many others.

Students are welcome to visit the library during breaktime, lunchtime as well as before and afterschool if they are looking for a place to read or study.

Our normal opening hours are: 8am – 5pm

The Library is run by Mrs Martin-Flanders and Miss Djedji.

Resources and Reading Lists

Our learning resources include:

  • Fiction books: we offer an extensive and growing collection of fiction books, suitable for all ages, abilities and tastes. Books are organised by genre for greater accessibility. We also have an extensive collection of easy reads.
  • Non-fiction books: we stock a curated selection of information texts to support research and homework to pursue their interests. We also have a range of GCSE and A-Level study materials.
  • Computers: in the library we have 12 computers and 15 Chromebooks. Students can use these during lessons, to complete homework or for printing at break times and after school.

Students are expected to have an independent reading book with them at all times while they are in school as part of their main equipment. They may borrow up to two books at a time for a duration of two weeks. Our librarians are always on hand to help students to find books they will find engaging and informative, and to help them to improve in their literacy.

Reading Plus

We ensure, wherever possible, that all students get a chance to enjoy reading, and run a successful Reading Plus programme which helps to support students with their literacy, vocabulary and reading fluency. Students can choose from a wide range of engaging online texts that are tailored to their individual levels and ability. Each week, students are set Reading Plus tasks to complete for homework. They can earn rewards based on their effort and progress.

Whatever students need, our friendly Library team is always on hand to provide support and answer any questions that students may have. Please refer to the Library Expectations and Library Borrower Expectations if you have any questions. You can also contact the Library Team by emailing library@cityacademy.co.uk.
